Veerana
We saw many horror movies recently like Raaz, Raat, Bhoot and 1920. All these movies are concentrating on scaring people than story. At the end of the movie it shows silly reasons for all the fear. Unlike the above mentioned movies Veerana movie had a good story and was released in 1988.
The story starts with a witch who is an expert in black magic and has some magical powers. Takur is a responsible person of that area who hangs this witch in public for people's sake. The witch followers takes her dead body to a safe place and manages to protect her soul.
A priest works hard and enters this soul into Takur's daughter's body. She stays with her uncle and aunt. Years passes and this girl turns into beautiful young woman. Her cousin studies in Bombay and returns back to see her father. After this many murders take place in that area. All of them are because of Takur's daughter. Finally people finds her and solves the problem.
Hemant Birje, Vijayendra, Jasmine and former Miss India Sahila Chadda played key roles in the movie. Jasmine particularly gave a good performance in the character of a girl possessed by another soul in her body. Directors Shyam Ramsay and Tulsi Ramsay managed to get good work from every department. Bappi Lihiri gave music for this film.

Boothnath
Vivek Sharma after working in many film departments, made his debut as a director with Boothnath.
Amitabh for the first time played a ghost character. Unlike other ghost movies director made this film in different way. The relation between a ghost and a child is the original story line director wrote a tight screenplay for this line.
Aditya Sharma (Shah Rukh Khan) a successful engineer shifts from Mumbai to Goa with his wife Anjali (Juhi Chawla) and school going son Aman (Aman Siddique). They stay in a bungalow. They don't know any thing about the bungalow.
bungalow owner Kailashnath (Amitabh Bachchan) who died years back doesn't like people staying in that bungalow. He plans to scare the family members. And starts his plan with Aman.
But Aman thinks he is an angel. Khailash Naath likes Aman's innocence and starts a friendship. Every day he explains to his friends and teachers about Boothnath aka ghost Khailash Naath.
Principal of the school Irani (Sathish Shah) complains to Anjali about Aman's strange behavior. Anjali finds out about Bhoothnath and forces her husband to leave the bungalow. Boothnath now is not ready to agree to this as he wants Aman friendship.
Amitabh as Boothnath did a great job especially in the funny scenes. Director Vivek Sharma impressed the audience by touching on a new concept.
Shah Rukh Khan played an almost guest role and Juhi Chawla is also good. Aman is the real hero of this film. Vishnu Roy caught some beautiful Goa locations onto his camera. Music from Saleem Merchant, Suleman Merchant, Vishal and Shekar is okay.

One day they find the watchman of that apartment was killed by somebody. Vishal meets the mother of that woman who killed herself in that flat. When the soul inside Swati watches her she reveals all the truth. Her neighbour Sanjay (Fardeen Khan) forced her to spent a night with him and she would have jumped from the balcony to protect herself. Sanjay and the watchman throw her son from the balcony who would've watched his mother's death.
She also reveals she killed the watchman with the help of Swati's body and would be planning to kill Sanjay. With the request of her mother she leaves Swati body. But kills Sanjay in jail who is arrested by Inspector Liaqat (Nana Patekar).
Ram Gopal Varma's received the Bollywood Award for Best Director. He was also nominated for the Filmfare. Urmila Matondkar gave her career's best performance in this movie and Rekha was justified for her role. All the remaining characters - Ajay Devgan, Fardeen Khan, Nana Patekar gave good performances.

Phoonk
After Darna Zaroori Hai, Ram Gopal Varma once again came out with the horror movie Phoonk. This time he used black magic as the main theme. Varma knows how to scare people with sounds and lonely places and silent scenes. But he kept away from all those things in this movie.
He concentrated on two things. One is black magic and the second about the people who don't believe in black magic, which was refelcted by the two leads in the movie.
Rajiv (Sudeep) is a successful contractor and an atheist with a good family, a beautiful wife, a daughter and a son. He never believes in God, ghosts and evil. But later struggles with the evil and depends on God and magicians. With this character the director justifies his tag line Its a Superstition Until It Happens To You.
One of Rajiv's business rival Anshuman (Kenny Desai seen in Black) and his wife Madhu (Ashwini Kalsekar) wants to destroy Rajiv's family. Madhu applies black magic on Rajiv's daughter. Rajiv thinks that it is a disease but later realises it is not and tries to protect his daughter.
Ram Gopal Varma failed to handle this horror flick. He took a wrong step in the story line and could not connect the two aspects of the story. No one expects this type of movie from Varma in the horror genre. Music director Amar Mohile tried his best to give life to movie. Camera work by Savita Singh in the movie is incredible.
Kannada Chocolate Boy Sudeep played a lead role as Rajiv and was impressive. Ahsaas Channa as daughter of Rajiv gave a good performance for her age. All the remaining characters are okay. But Ashwini Kalsekar fame of Aashiq Banaya Aapne is very bad with most of the people finding her annoying.

Junoon
Junoon is a horror movie released in 1992, directed by Mahesh Bhatt. Compared with other horror movies this concept is a little unique. A tiger's soul and its curse is the main story line. In this movie the mysterious feel in the story dominates fear. The director was inspired by the Hollywood movie An American Werewolf in London.
Dr Nita (Pooja Bhatt) is of a marriageable age. Her parents want a wealthy person as their son-in-law. But Nita is in love with upcoming singer Ravi (Avinash Wadhawan) who is not a wealthy man.
A seriously injured person Vikram (Rahul Roy) is admitted in Nita's hospital, who was injured by a tiger which kills his friend. Nita makes helps him recover. He starts liking her. But the tiger's curse transforms him into a tiger every full-moon.
He visits Nita's home and convinces her parents to let him marry her, breaking the relationship between Nita and Ravi. On the day of his marriage with Nita he transforms into a tiger and kills a woman. After that day, every night he continues to do the same thing.
One day Nita finds out her husband is not an ordinary man. She approaches a priest (Tom Alter) and to understand the mystery and find a solution for the problem. To kill Vikram they require a special dagger. If they kill him in any other way the curse transfers to them. After facing many problems from Vikram, Nita and Ravi find the dagger in a cave and kill Vikram.
Mahesh Bhatt has followed his own style as always. Pooja Bhatt gave a good performance and looked attractive. Rahul Roy was impressive. The other characters don't have a chance to perform. The director has got a good back ground score by Shravan Rathod.
